Scaramouche ergänzt thematisch eine Reihe von Werken, die Philip Sparke in Anlehnung an die Tradition des italienischen Improvisationstheaters Commedia dell’arte schrieb. Wie zuvor Harlequin bringt Scaramouche die kontrastiven Stimmungen von Pathos und Komödie zum Ausdruck. Mit einer ausdrucksvollen Ballade und einem lebhaften Vivace gelang es Sparke, sowohl die lyrischen als auch die technischen Qualitäten des Euphoniums auszunutzen.
