In this well-known Scottish ballad, a rider rides his horse away from home one sunny day. Later, his horse returns, but he does not. The melody of this ballad depicts his bride’s emotional reaction to the loss of her husband George Campbell.  The composer’s setting beautifully captures the deep emotions of the tragic song, culminating in a stunning moment with a glockenspiel playing the simple melody over a background of string tremolo.  Use this beautiful string orchestra work to demonstrate to your students the magical power music has to evoke human feeling.
