In der „Ode an die Seele des Menschen“ verwendete James Curnow thematisches Material aus dem 4. Satz von Beethoven 9. Sinfonie und verwandelte dies in eine kaleidoskopartig schillernde musikalische Fantasie. Neben diesem Thema klingen noch andere Teile der Sinfonie durch, wie z. B. das Alla Marcia, das Scherzo, das Andante maestoso und zuletzt auch die erhebende Ode an die Freude.
